So near and yet so far: SME valuation in the DACH region

Business valuation is mathematics + context, which is also evident in a comparison of the valuation of SMEs in the DACH region. The article just published gives an overview of – not only cultural – differences.

The following essay is dedicated to Prof. Dr. Volker H. Peemöller on his birthday on 16 May 2020. He has been a member of the advisory board of Betriebs-Berater since 2002 and has published several articles in this journal. One of his research areas is business valuation, especially the valuation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The valuation of SMEs is not a “small” valuation and certainly not a simple one. It becomes even more complicated when it involves valuations or valuations from abroad that have to be decided on domestically – e.g. in the case of purchase and sale, legal disputes or arbitration proceedings. Differences in the valuation of SMEs also arise within the DACH region (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) despite largely the same language. Knowing these is the first step to making better decisions and avoiding conflicts. The following article provides an overview, with special reference to Peemöller’s work.
